David P. Johnson (1777-1844) has been documented as the weaver of many coverlets inscribed SCIPIO NY between 1829-1838. An introduction to what we mean by coverlets will be provided, which will be followed by an overview of the Scipio coverlets that have been documented. David P. Johnson had several occupations in addition to weaving, including operating a general store and farming. We’ll also explore David P. Johnson’s connection to the large extended Conger family of coverlet weavers. Several coverlets will be on display, and you are encouraged to bring your Scipio coverlet to the program.
Presenter Marty Schlabach came to coverlets through his wife, Mary Jean Welser. She has been interested in and collected textiles for decades, with a particular interest in quilts. Something more than 10 years ago, while pawing through a pile of textiles at a local estate sale, Mary Jean came across two whole cloth late 18th century quilts and one geometric coverlet. Thus, started their interest in, exploration of and collection of coverlets. As a retired librarian, Marty particularly enjoys the historical research associated with learning about coverlets and their weavers. Marty & Mary Jean live in Interlaken, NY, spend substantial time gardening and working on their 1840s Greek Revival farmhouse.
