Steamboats on the Finger Lakes

  • Howland Stone Store Museum 2956 State Route 34B Aurora, NY 13026 (map)

Gary Emmerson will present a program on Steamboats on the Finger Lakes .

The 19th century was the glory days of steamboats on the Finger Lakes. Passengers could travel in comfort and style as they traveled north and south on Seneca and Cayuga Lakes to meet their other transportation connections. For much of the century, steamboats were a vital part of the economy and transportation on the lakes, and they helped develop the communities along the shores. The extension of railroads, and later the development of the automobile, eventually ended the reign of the steamboats, but they are an important part of our local history that once provided a link to the rest of the nation through their connections with canals and railroads."
